The Importance of Music to Girls

Trying to “protect” your favorite bands from the love of teenage girls isn’t doing anyone any favors.
Words by Brodie, illustration by Ana.

The girls I live with have introduced me to:
Metric / Franz Ferdinand / The Hold Steady / Interpol / Kanye West / Drake / Three 6 Mafia / Lil Wayne / Ke$ha / Florence + The Machine / Regina Spektor / The New Pornographers / The Strokes / Arcade Fire / The Bravery / The Killers / Yeah Yeah Yeahs AND MANY MORE!!
I wanna say kid 1 is a bigger music fan than I ever was and not just because of being able to plug into an mp3 player 24/7.  And I don’t care that she’s a Smiths obsessive.
Special shout out to the little redheaded girl in HS who insisted I buy a Cheap Trick record— you were right!!
EDIT — Overthinking this today and it seems a little too “I’m super hip and even MORE hip thanks to paying some attention to my girl children instead of shutting them out with a wall of dad rock as do so many of my peers yay me”.  More importantly they have (particularly younger) introduced me to the joys of straight up pop and JFC I am making it worse.  Anyway I forgot The Spice Girls and Josie and the Pussycats and No Doubt.  When I finally get my gleemonex on someday I think what’s gonna pop up will be me and the kids drivin’ around in our minivan singing Britney Spears’ “Lucky” at the top of our lungs.
